Child car seat UK rules and regulations

Please enjoy this special guest post from our friends across the pond at Hiremebaby.

The rules on child seats can be rather confusing especially if you are visiting the UK from overseas.  Hiremebaby ensures that all car seats rented meet the latest EU regulations and we can help make sure that you select the right seat for your child as well as checking compatibility with your car.  We offer car seats across all categories suitable from birth up to 12 years+ and with extended rear facing up to 4 years.

We like to help our customers stay informed so we’ve put together a helpful summary of facts to help you navigate the rules around car seats in the UK.

1) All children must use a child car seat until they are 12 years old or 135cm (4ft5in) whichever comes first.  After this, children must use an adult seatbelt.  Car seats must be fitted correctly according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

(Safety experts recommend a car seat is used for all children under 150cm (4ft11in).

2) Children must be positioned rear facing until they are 15 months old. After 15 months old, children can be positioned forward facing.

(Safety experts recommend children are positioned rear facing for as long as possible.  Research has shown rear facing to be 500% safer for children up to 2 years of age.)

3) Backless booster seats are only permitted for children over 125cm in height and weighing more than 22kg.  Hiremebaby do not hire backless booster seats - we offer a high back booster seat suitable for children up to 12 years (36kg)

4) Legally, a child can travel without a car seat in a taxi or private hire vehicle in the rear of the car, without an adult seat belt if they are under 3 and with an adult seat belt if over 3.

5) Legally, if the correct car seat is not available, children over 3 can travel in a car wearing an adult seat belt if the journey is unexpected, necessary and over a short distance.  This does not apply to children under 3, unless in a taxi.

6) It is the drivers legal responsibility to ensure children are in appropriate car seats whilst travelling.

Quick Baby Proofing Tips for Little Visitors

That moment you've been looking forward to for months has finally arrived! Your precious grandchild, adorable niece/nephew, or bestie's baby is on their way to your home for the very first time. You're determined to make the experience as pleasant as possible for the incumbent parents and their little love — starting with making sure your home is a safe place for baby.

There are lots of little things you can do, without breaking the bank, to ensure both baby and baby's mama sleep easy during their stay. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when you have a little one incoming and need to do a quick baby proof of your home!

Designate Safe Spaces

Instead of combing through your entire house looking for hazards, designate a space or spaces for baby, and then make sure those spaces are extra safe. Likely, little visitors will spend their time in two places: the bedroom and the living room. Make sure you sweep these two rooms for common choking hazards like bottle caps (incidentally, the most commonly choked upon item!), loose change, the plastic top of coil door stops and small toys with parts that could fall off.

A good practice is, if it's small enough to fit in a child's mouth, put it away. Exercise this same judgment in terms of objects that could tumble. Heavy items and unsecured pieces of furniture should be kept well out of reach or temporarily moved to a baby free zone.

Set Up Your Safe Spaces

Once you've picked your safe spaces, you can section them off with strategically placed baby gates. Better yet, rent a Pack n Play from a baby gear rental service like FlyBaby, and you won't have to worry about baby wandering off at all.

When setting up baby's bedroom, make sure you have a proper crib, mattress & sheets for him/her to sleep in. This will help baby sleep better, which means everyone else gets to sleep better too! You can rent all of it for the weekend through FlyBaby.

Bathroom Etiquette

Another spot that will be frequented by baby is the bathroom. There are little things you do to help a visiting mama out come bath time, like make sure the tub has an anti-slip bath mat and have some gentle baby shampoo and soap on hand. Having a stack of soft towels ready for your guests to use is also a nice touch. Finally, tuck your toiletries and medicine away in higher cabinets just for good measure.

In the end, you don't have to spend tons of money, or hire a handyman, to get your home ready for a little visitor. Just make sure you have a couple baby safe zones designated, and the gear on hand to keep them comfortable. A baby's visit will go oh so much smoother, if they have A) a comfortable place to sleep and B) a comfortable place to play!

Incidentally, both things that you can affordably rent with FlyBaby.

Baby Friendly City Guide: LA

What can you do with a baby on vacation? They may have tiny (adorable) legs and arms, but despite their "shortcomings", there are lots of activities you can partake in with a little traveler in tow. The trick is to do some pre-trip research and find out what your destination has to offer for baby & mama.

At FlyBaby HQ, we're all about making travel accessible to families, so we decided to put together a Baby Friendly City Guide series for all you jet-setting mamas and papas out there. In this first post, we're talking about the city of angels itself, and all the good fun you can get up to — with under twos!

L.A. BABY

Hit the Beach

When you think of L.A., you no doubt think of going to the beach. With baby, a beach day away from indoor amenities can seem like a task not worth tackling. But one of the many cool things about L.A. is that it boasts beaches especially designated for young children. These beaches have accessible, clean facilities and safe play areas for young'uns of all ages.

One such spot can be found in Orange County and is aptly named Baby Beach! This idyllic protected white sand cove is the perfect spot to take your littles and sports well-maintained facilities and free parking. Another excellent option for beachin' it with babes is the Annenberg. A Santa Monica state beach featuring spectacular views, comprehensive facilities, and a stroller-accessible boardwalk.

Hit the Museum

You may think that the museum wouldn't be of much interest to baby, but L.A. has a museum or two made just for those littlest of human beings.

The Zimmer Children's Museum is a perfect spot for taking your extra littles on an extra hot day when you're craving some AC action. Littles can crawl around to their hearts content and explore miniature buildings and vehicles in the process. This museum offers activities for babies and toddlers, and admission for grandparents is free! Maybe you and hubby can even escape for an afternoon, while grandma and grandpa spend some quality time with their favorite grandchild... Anything is possible at the Zimmer.

Another excellent toddler-centric establishment is the California Science Center in Exposition Park. Here littles can enjoy three kids only Discovery Rooms, explore rotating science exhibits and watch as baby chicks hatch... Added bonus – admission is free!

Hit the Park

If you don't have the time, budget, or will to take on an amusement park like Disneyland, opt for a smaller and less hectic option. L.A. has several theme parks that exist on a smaller scale than Disney and are better suited for those of a smaller stature.

Try visiting Adventure City, "The little theme park that's BIG on family fun!" This classic amusement park admits children under 1 year of age for free and has several rides that are baby-friendly. Take a trip on the Adventure City Express Train with your under twos or try the carousel together! There is also a petting zoo and Thomas the Tank Engine play area suitable for little crawlers to explore.

Griffith Park, is more park than amusement park, although it does sport not one, but three miniature trains that you can ride with your little! There is also a famous merry-go-round where it is said Walt Disney had the idea to create Disneyland. Larger even than Central Park in NYC, Griffith is a local favorite, and is truly a beautiful destination to enjoy with your family.

Why rent baby gear for your next family trip?

FlyBaby was born from a desire to make travel accessible for families. It was born from co-founder Kate's very real-life experience of attempting to wrangle five too many bags and a pack n' play onto a plane with her baby... A veritable logistic nightmare, where suddenly her and her husband became "those people". There had to be a better way. And there is!

Renting baby gear solves the family packing problem beautifully. But the benefits of renting baby gear while traveling are not limited to luggage concerns...

Why rent baby gear on your next trip? Here's why:

1. Environmentally Friendly

A lot of families end up buying cheap disposable gear at their destination instead of bringing it along. Things like bottle warmers, that are awkward to fit in a suitcase, get left behind in favor of buying an inexpensive one on arrival. Inevitably, that piece of plastic gear is abandoned at the hotel and then finds its way to the dumpster. Not so great for the environment or your wallet, but what other option did you have? Avoid that guilt and extra spend by renting what you need instead.

2. Skip the Baggage Line

Do you remember traveling pre-baby — breezing by the lengthy baggage check line, proudly rolling your one piece of compact carry-on behind you? Saving yourself an extra hour of standing in line twiddling your thumbs, by being a savvy light-weight traveler? These days don't have to be over! You can still travel with a reasonable amount of luggage post-baby. How? You guessed it. Rent it.

3. Cut Costs

It used to be you could check all your bags for no extra cost. The beginning of the millennial generation will remember these days fondly. At the time, you also had free meals, beverages, blankets, headphones... Now, you pay for everything. Every piece of luggage you check will cost you, and luggage fees seem to increase daily. Cut those costs by cutting the extra bags.
Renting baby gear at your destination, instead of checking it, ultimately helps you save money.

4. Stress-free

Knowing that you don't have to worry about the logistics of packing all your baby gear will go a long way to alleviate the stress of embarking on a trip with baby. Knowing that the airport won't be a nightmare, will also ease those stress levels. When you get to your destination, and all the baby gear you need is waiting for you, you will be able to breathe a sigh of relief, put baby down for the night in his/her full-size high-quality crib and enjoy a much-deserved glass of wine after a long day on the road!

5. Support Local Moms

When you rent baby gear through FlyBaby, you are supporting our amazing community of mom partners looking to make a supplementary income. By renting gear, you are saving yourself stress and money — which is awesome, yes. But more than that, you are empowering local moms to have their own side business and to better support their families. Women empowering women. That's the FlyBaby business model.

FlyBaby offers a wide variety of high-quality, modern baby equipment for rent in cities across North America. When you rent baby gear through FlyBaby, you are part of a movement of women finding solutions for modern day motherhood through tech, community, and shared ingenuity. Try it and rediscover your wanderlust — this time with baby.
